Jail and Prison Abuse
Exposing Violence. Demanding Dignity.
Every person in custody—no matter their circumstances—has the right to be treated humanely. The Constitution guarantees freedom from cruel and unusual punishment. Yet across the country, men and women continue to suffer from abuse, neglect, and indifference inside jails, prisons, and detention centers.
At Qureshi Law, we represent people who have been abused, injured, or killed while in custody. Our firm takes on the public and private entities responsible for allowing violence, medical neglect, and inhumane conditions to persist. We fight to expose what happens behind closed doors and to secure justice for victims and their families.
In 2025, Omar Qureshi and Max Schoening won a record-breaking $42.75 million federal jury verdict on behalf of the family of Erie Moore, Sr., who died after being brutally abused in a private jail in Louisiana. Guards at a facility operated by LaSalle Management Company repeatedly used mace and physical force on Mr. Moore while he was handcuffed and defenseless. The company denied wrongdoing. The Louisiana jury unanimously disagreed. The verdict—the largest ever against a private correctional company in U.S. history and the largest civil rights verdict in Louisiana history—sent a powerful message: human life does not lose its value behind bars.
Qureshi Law also represents survivors of jail and prison violence, denial of medical care, and wrongful death in custody. We have handled cases involving assaults by correctional officers, failure to protect from inmate violence, and neglect by jail medical staff.
Our work has uncovered patterns of abuse and systemic failures in both public and privately run facilities. We bring these cases not only to obtain justice for our clients, but to push for accountability, transparency, and reform in a system that too often hides its worst harms.
